The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has ordered Microsoft Corp. to pay more than US$140M to z4 Technologies, Inc. of Michigan for patent infringement. The decision upheld an earlier jury verdict from the Eastern District of Texas. The suit alleged that Microsoft’s Windows XP and Office 2003 infringed z4’s U.S. patents 6044471 and 6785825 related to securing software to reduce unauthorized use and decrease software piracy. z4 also sued Autodesk.
Shortly following the decision, z4 sued Microsoft again in relation to its Vista and Office 2007 products.
