An Ottawa-based wireless company with a history of filing patent infringement claims against major leading technology companies recently filed a new lawsuit alleging patent infringement over technology in cable modems. The Canadian wireless company, WiLAN, launched the lawsuits against Comcast, Time Warner, and Charter Communications in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. WiLAN alleges that these cable companies have been "marketing and selling cable systems and modems", thus violating U.S. patent No. 5,761,602. This patent covers "the broadcasting of data to a number of remote networks and computers."
Last month WiLAN filed patent infringement lawsuits against Alcatel-Lucent, Sony Ericsson, LG Electronics, and other mobile communication companies. Similarly, in April, WiLAN filed lawsuits against Acer, Apple, Dell, HP, Lenovo and various other technology companies alleging patent infringement due to their use of Bluetooth in PCs and mobile phones.
