On April 8, Wi-LAN Inc., an Ottawa-based company, announced that it is suing Apple, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Intel and 15 other companies for infringing Wi-LAN's patent on Bluetooth technology. Wi-LAN filed the suit in a Texas federal court, alleging that these companies are violating its U.S. patent by selling consumer electronics that contain the Bluetooth technology. This technology uses radio waves to transmit voice and data wirelessly over short distances. Wi-LAN is seeking unspecified compensatory damages, plus triple damages for "wilful" infringement.
