In April 2005, the WTO ruled that the United States has until April 2006 to adapt its legislation to permit Antiguan online gaming firms to operate in the U.S. The ruling followed complaints from Antigua that U.S. prohibitions prevented U.S. banks and major Internet search engines from doing business with gambling firms in Antigua and were harming its online gaming business.
In arguing its position, Antigua stressed the importance of its online gaming industry as a vital part of its drive to boost its economy and job opportunities and to reduce the island's economic dependence on tourism.
