A recent report released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) indicates that patent filings in China have increased by more than six times in the ten year period ending in 2004. As a result, China now stands in fifth place among the world leaders for total number of patents filed, after Japan, the United States, the European Patent Office and South Korea. The WIPO report states that patent statistics are increasingly recognized as useful indicators of inventive activity and of technology flows. The report also recognizes a general shift in the distribution of patent filings worldwide, as South Korea and China are becoming major industrial economies.
