Verizon Sues Vonage for Patent Infringement

Verizon Communications Inc. filed a lawsuit against Vonage Holdings Corp. on June 12, claiming that Vonage is infringing patent rights that Verizon has on the technology for making phone calls over the Internet, so called voice over Internet protocol or VoIP.

Verizon’s complaint charges that Vonage is infringing at least seven of Verizon’s patents including inventions related to gateway interfaces between a packet-switched and circuit-switched network, billing and fraud detection, call services such as call forwarding and voicemail, and methods related to Wi-Fi handset use in a VoIP network. Vonage has responded that its services have been developed with its own proprietary technology and technology licensed from third parties.
