Verizon Communications has filed a suit to overturn the new Internet access rules issued by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) – rules which Verizon alleges are ultra vires. These controversial rules, which focus on Internet connections for personal home computers and private wireless networks, prevent Internet service providers from intentionally blocking or favouring Web sites, or from blocking Internet voice applications (such as Vonage and Skype). The new rules are expected to come into force within months. Analysts suggest that other companies will file similar suits, and note that Verizon filed its suit in the same court that ruled against the FCC's efforts to sanction Comast for blocking Web traffic.
