U.S. To Toughen Online Privacy Laws

The White House is preparing to create new comprehensive laws to police online privacy. The new laws will be included in a U.S. Commerce Department report, which can be expected in the next few weeks.  A new position will also be created to monitor online privacy issues.

There is currently no comprehensive U.S. law that protects consumer privacy online.  Recent administrations have not regulated the Internet for fear of stifling innovation.  As such, the new laws will mark a change from the current self-governing policy, under which the Federal Trade Commission “can take action only if a privacy-violating action is deemed 'deceptive' or 'unfair'”.
