U.S. Businessman Jailed for Trade Secret Theft

Walter Liew and his wife were indicted last year in connection with the alleged theft of trade secrets from chemical manufacturer DuPont at China’s behest. After a meeting with a number of Chinese officials in 1991 at a banquet, Liew, a U.S. citizen, was given certain directives and projects. Liew then apparently paid two former DuPont employees for information and assistance related to the manufacture of chloride-route titanium dioxide (TiO2), a white pigment with a diverse range of applications.

In the seized documents in connection with the investigation, Liew has apparently described himself as having provided China with key technologies with national defence applications. In fact, the technology is one of DuPont’s more valuable technologies. Liew and his wife have pleaded not guilty to the various charges, and have been denied bail.
