US Appeals Court Rules Airport ID Checks are Lawful

An action against Southwest and United Airlines was initiated in 2002 after they both did not allow a passenger on board their flights because he refused to show any identification. Last week, a three-judge panel of Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals disagreed with the passenger’s argument that requiring identification from airline passengers was unconstitutional. Judge Richard Paez wrote: "the Constitution does not guarantee the right to travel by any particular form of transportation." Over the past decade, the U.S. has strictly enforced checks of identification cards at airports, with additional checks added after the September 11 attacks, when hijacked commercial jets flew into the World Trade Center.
