UK Government Clamps Down on Internet Casino Advertising

The Department for Culture Media & Sport (DCMS) in the United Kingdom plans to target advertisers and publishers who sell or publish advertisements that offer inducements to online gambling, such as free entry to online tournaments or prizes.

UK laws prohibit such advertisements. However, the laws are difficult to enforce because many of the Internet casino operators who pay for the ads are based offshore and are not subject to UK law.

The DCMS says it plans to send letters to these operators as well as to UK based advertisers and publishers, warning them that the government will no longer tolerate advertisements for Internet casinos that offer inducements to gamble. The letters will clarify that advertisers or publishers who sell or publish such ads could face fines or prison time.
