A U.S. district court judge reversed an earlier decision that shut down the Wikileaks.org website (a renegade site that posts leaked government and corporate documents that it says expose unethical behaviour), due to concerns over appropriate jurisdiction and possible violations of the U.S. First Amendment. Zurich-based bank, Julius Baer, originally sought the injunction to address the posting on Wikileaks.org of sensitive account information stolen by a disgruntled former employee. Free speech advocates voiced concerns over the decision to shut down the entire site, rather than to simply remove the information at issue. In addition to jurisdiction and First Amendment concerns, the court also recognized the ineffectiveness of the injunction given that a number of other websites had quickly obtained and disseminated the account information.
