After introducing the Gambling Act last year in order to modernize Britain’s 40-year-old gambling laws via a new regulatory framework, criticisms from opposition politicians and welfare groups warned of gambling addiction and crime amid liberalization. As part of its efforts to regulate the rapidly growing online gambling industry, and help protect children from gaining access to the sites, Britain intends to hold a global online gambling summit this year. The spokesman for the U.K. Department for Culture, Media and Sport has said they “want to initiate a discussion about problem areas which include protection of children, advertising, money laundering and criminal infiltration.” Online casinos and poker rooms have formed a market valued at up to $12 billion a year globally.
