Micro-blogging site Twitter has announced that it has changed its policy and will now be sending its Users unsolicited advertisements, which it calls “promoted tweets”. Previously, Twitter would only send users promoted tweets for companies that users were “following”. The new program will determine which promoted tweets are relevant to users, and will only send those tweets to them. These tweets will appear both in users’ Twitter timelines as well as in search results. As a result of these changes, Twitter users can expect to see a higher volume of advertising as the new program rolls out this fall.
