Sister Maria Jesus Galan, a nun who has lived inside a convent in Toledo, Spain, for 35 years was asked to leave the convent for spending too much time on Facebook. The convent in question generally discourages its nuns from too much contact with the outside world.
Since the convent allowed the use of a computer 10 years ago, Sister Maria has used it to digitize the convent’s archives. She even won an award from the local government for her digital initiatives. However, once she began to use Facebook and gained numerous Facebook friends, the convent claimed that this Facebook activity made life in the convent impossible. As a result, she was asked to leave.
