The Dangers of Text Messaging

Text messaging can lead to behavioural addictions and increased security risks, according to two recent articles.

A renowned psychiatric clinic in Britain has reported a huge rise in "technology addictions". Citing text messaging is an example of such a behavioural addiction, the clinic has noted that some patients spend up to seven hours a day in Internet chat rooms.

Instant text messaging is also a growing channel of infection for virus or worm attacks. The latest Internet security report by technology vendor Symantec points to a 400 percent increase in the role of instant messaging and peer-to-peer technology in recent top virus threats. The security risk increases with the growing popularity of instant messaging, which allows for file sharing without the usual technology safeguards.
