Teen Sues MySpace.com for Failure of the Website to Protect Her Against Sexual Predator

A fourteen-year-old girl and her mother are suing MySpace and its parent company in connection with the sexual assault of the girl by a nineteen-year-old man who met the girl through the Myspace.com social networking website. The alleged assault occurred after the girl and the man (who is also a defendant in the lawsuit) met for a date, after having exchanged a series of emails and phone calls. The claim, which is in the amount of $30M, alleges that MySpace failed to protect minors from adult sexual predators because the website does not require users to verify their age, and does not otherwise implement appropriate security measures aimed at preventing communications between adults and minors. The lawsuit includes news reports of other assault cases in which girls were contacted through MySpace.com.
