Symantec, Adobe Sue Law Firm Over Software Copying Claim

The Software Information Industry Association (SIIA) filed a lawsuit on December 5, 2007 in California Northern District Court against Philadelphia-based law firm Fox Rothschild LLP alleging copyright infringement arising from copying Symantec’s Norton anti-virus products without a license. Other vendors named in the suit include software makers Adobe Systems, Corel, and Sonic Solutions. The suit accuses the law firm of copying 19 software products over the past six years.

The suit seeks to prohibit the firm from continuing to use the software, as well as an order to prohibit the firm from erasing any of the software or any electronic documentation related to the use and installation of the software, in addition to unspecified damages.

According to SIIA litigation counsel Scott Bain, the alleged unauthorized software use was brought to its attention through a whistleblower program.
