States Make Play for Web Gambling

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie will soon decide whether to pass a bill that would allow Atlantic City casino companies to run gambling websites for New Jersey residents.  If passed, the bill would make New Jersey the first state to sanction online gambling.

New Jersey is not the only state trending towards legalizing online gaming.  Iowa lawmakers recently introduced a bill to legalize online poker, and California and Florida are among other states considering similar bills.  Proponents of legalizing online gambling believe states would benefit, by both increasing state revenue and allowing for job creation.

Online gambling was effectively outlawed in 2006 when Congress banned financial companies from processing gambling transactions across state lines. However, the proposed bills by various states would not run afoul of the federal ban, as proponents state that access to gaming websites would be limited to people using them from inside the state.

The U.S. Department of Justice takes the position that nearly all forms of online gambling are illegal in the U.S. yet it has not publicly commented on these recent state proposals.
