Access Copyright, a collective society representing writers and publishers of over 800,000 Canadian works, has filed suit against Staples/Business Depot (“Staples”) for copyright infringement. The suit claims $10 million in damages supposedly suffered through unauthorized photocopying by Staples’ customers.
The press release by Access Copyright, which claims that the suit is the largest copyright infringement suit ever commenced in Canada, appears to suggest that Staples has authorized or is somehow otherwise responsible for the activities of Staples’ customers.
Access Copyright says that is has been investigating Staples since 1998 and that the suit was filed only after attempts at settlement with Staples failed. The investigations were allegedly in response to concerns raised by creators and publishers.
