Sony Complains of Patent Infringement by LG

Sony Corp. has filed a patent infringement complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission against LG Electronics and its U.S. subsidiaries alleging that LG smart-phones infringe Sony’s proprietary technologies.  The complaint alleges that LG’s products infringe seven of Sony’s patents, including one describing the operation of photo-caller ID functionality in smart-phones.

In recent years there have been an increasing number of legal battles between smart-phone manufacturers.  Apple Inc., Microsoft Corp., Nokia Corp. and HTC Corp. have all been involved in legal battles in an effort to maintain their positions in this growing market.

Sony has asked the International Trade Commission to block imports of LG products containing the disputed technologies. However, it is unlikely that LG’s sales will be threatened in the near future as patent cases are typically lengthy and can take many years to resolve.  In addition, the parties often enter into licensing and royalty arrangements as a method of settling the lawsuit.
