Samsung Sues Apple for Infringement of "Standards-Essential" Patents

Samsung Electronics, has filed four lawsuits against Apple, Inc. in the Hague, Netherlands, alleging infringement of four Samsung patents relating to 3G technology currently used by Apple in its mobile products, specifically the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad 1 and iPad 2. The patents cover methods of managing the data connection and speed between a mobile device and a network base station. However, because the patented technology is incorporated in internationally accepted 3G and UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System, also known as Freedom of Mobile Multimedia Access (FOMA) or 3GSM) technology standards, Samsung cannot deny Apple a license to the technology on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms, also known as RAND or FRAND terms.

Samsung is bringing similar infringement suits against Apple in the U.S., the U.K., France, Germany, Japan and South Korea.
