A recent report indicates that Reuters and Yahoo News have teamed up in an effort to solicit photographs and videos from the public for use in news publications on the Yahoo and Reuters’ site, and for potential distribution to Reuters’ clients. Individuals will be able to upload amateur photos and videos taken with camera phones and other digital cameras and video recorders to a section of Yahoo called You Witness News. Editors at both Reuters and Yahoo will review the submissions and select some for inclusion with relevant news articles. People whose photographs and videos are selected for distribution to Reuters’ clients will receive payment. The photographs and videos will first be vetted in an attempt to weed out fraudulent or retouched images, which has been an issue with freelance photographers working for Reuters in the past.
The initiative with Yahoo supplements several other initiatives by Reuters to obtain content placed on the Internet by the public (such as on blogs) for inclusion in professional news publications. Critics question whether You Witness News will simply be flooded with content that does not amount to national news stories of interest.
