A recent study in the United States on electronic monitoring of employees shows that employers are increasingly using technology and policies to manage productivity and resources. The study shows that the most prevalent form of monitoring is with respect to employee web surfing with 76% of the surveyed companies monitoring Website connections. However, employers also indicated that they were monitoring for many different reasons and using different methods with 36% tracking content, keystrokes and time spent at the keyboard, 50% storing and reviewing employees' computer files, and 55% reviewing and retaining e-mail messages.

Employers also indicated their willingness to enforce their internet and e-mail use policies with 26% having fired employees for misusing the Internet and another 25% having terminated employees for e-mail misuse.

The study was prepared jointly by the American Management Association and The ePolicy Institute and included 526 companies in the United States.
