Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, a nonprofit consumer education program, has noted some disturbing trends in its study of online pharmacies. Of the 50 pharmacies studied, only 22% had posted privacy notices under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, and only 8% were certified by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. The study warns consumers against purchasing drugs in response to unsolicited emails or spam and provides tips for consumers on how to locate a reputable online pharmacy. Such pharmacies will provide a privacy policy that is easy to locate, provide access to a licensed pharmacist, require and verify a prescription, and sell FDA-approved medication.
