RIM Sues Software Firm for Patent Infringement

Research In Motion Ltd. (RIM) has launched a patent infringement lawsuit in Federal Court against Kik Interactive Ltd. (Kik), a small software development firm based in Waterloo, Ontario.

Kik is the developer of the Kik Messenger, a smart-phone application that lets users instantly send messages to one another on BlackBerrys, iPhones and mobile devices running Google’s Android operating system.

RIM banned the application from its Blackberry app store shortly after its launch.  RIM then filed suit, claiming that the Kik Messenger infringes patents related to RIM’s own Blackberry Messenger.  The chief executive officer of Kik, Ted Livingston, was a former employee at RIM.  RIM alleges that shortly following his employment at RIM, Livingston started his own instant-messaging application.
