The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Richmond ruled against the Canadian maker of BlackBerry, Research in Motion (RIM), last week in a patent infringement case launched by NTP Inc., a holding company in Virginia that enforces patents owned by Chicago-based inventors Thomas J. Campana Jr., Michael P. Ponschke, and Gary F. Thelen.
NTP's suit against RIM specifically dealt with infringement allegations on its patents with respect to the use of e-mail systems and radio frequency wireless communications.
The $53.7 million judgment was accompanied with an injunction preventing RIM from making, using, or offering to sell its hand-held services or software in the United States. The injunction however has been stayed pending an appeal to be filed by RIM in the next few weeks.
NTP has announced that it will continue to negotiate patent licensing arrangements with other manufacturers and would not necessarily exclude RIM from consideration to obtain such licenses.
