On May 24, 2004, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) launched a new wave of copyright infringement actions against 493 unnamed "John Doe" defendants alleged to be illegally trading in music online, and against 24 named defendants who had been previously identified through "John Doe" proceedings.
Since January, RIAA has commenced over 1500 lawsuits against alleged illegal file sharers. These recent lawsuits, filed in several major federal courts across the United States, are part of RIAA's continuing effort to protect the rights of copyright owners and deter illegal file sharing.
