Proposed German Law to Protect Workers

Proposed legislation relating to the protection of employee data was recently announced by Germany’s Interior Minister. The legislation as drafted would still permit employers to conduct Internet research about perspective employees, provided they limit searches to publicly-available information. It would, however, be illegal under the proposed legislation to "friend" a potential new employee to learn private details of their life. The new law would also restrict employers' ability to use video surveillance at work unless they are in public spaces or employees are advised that they are subject to such surveillance.
