Earlier last week, a Pennsylvanian parent named Garen Meguerian filed a lawsuit against Apple, claiming that the company’s policy for in-app purchases for the iPhone or iPad does not go far enough to prevent children from buying currency/points for inside apps or games.
Specifically, the suit was filed after Meguerian’s 9-year old daughter downloaded several free iOS games: Zombie Café, Treasure Story and City Story. According to the complaint, shortly thereafter, the 9-year old then proceeded to buy virtual currency within the games, which ended up costing Meguerian $200.
Citing that “these games are highly addictive, designed deliberately so, and tend to compel children playing them to purchase large quantities of game currency, amounting to as much as $100 purchase or more”, the lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court of Northern California, requests class-action status and asks for unspecified damages and legal fees.
