Ontario has decided to seek input on its plans to offer Internet gambling starting in 2012.
British Columbia and Quebec are both currently operating government-run online casinos, and Ontario wants to determine whether to follow suit and offer a government-run gaming site, or retain one or more private partners to operate online gaming on the government’s behalf.
The Criminal Code requires provincial lottery corporations to “conduct and manage” all gambling in their territories. However, several provincial lotteries, including Ontario’s, also sub-contract private companies to operate land-based casinos on their behalf. As such, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) believes that no change to the Criminal Code is required should it choose to work with third party operators.
