Ontario Company Fires Employees for Internet Posting

Farm Boy, an Ontario grocery store chain, recently terminated several employees based only on postings that they had made to Facebook, an online social networking website.

There is a group of almost 200 Farm Boy employees who have a group in Facebook entitled “I Got Farm Boy’d”. It is meant to be a place of free expression for current and former employees of the company. There are other related groups on the website as well.

One of the employees apparently made a statement on Facebook, which he later claimed not to be literal, that he had stolen merchandise from his employer. Despite the fact that there had been no other history of problems with the employee, he was confronted immediately thereafter by his manager and terminated. Farm Boy also terminated another employee for being involved in the group.
