Ontario To Use Software to Meet Privacy and Access to Information Laws

IBM and the Ontario Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) have launched a joint project to create an electronic template of current privacy legislation in an attempt to address privacy concerns and to ensure compliance with the Freedom of Information and Privacy Protection Act (FIPPA). It is anticipated that the electronic template will permit different divisions within companies and government to access information contained in their databases and simultaneously comply with the FIPPA. The software, developed by IBM, operates by building privacy rules into a database. A company can then ensure that the information that is stored and disseminated complies with the FIPPA requirements. The software will be tested at an Ontario Ministry to determine its efficacy.
