Online Gambling Coming to Ontario

The Ontario government, through the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG), plans to establish an online gaming program in Ontario by 2012.  The OLG states that potential players will have to register before playing, and age and identity verification software will be implemented to protect players.

It is estimated that Ontarians spend approximately $400 million each year in unregulated online gambling.  However, Paul Godfrey, the chair of the OLG, states that “in its current form, online gaming in Ontario does not return proceeds to this province.” By regulating online gaming in Ontario, the government believes that the province can net $100 million or more in profit annually within five years of being established.

Ontario is not the only province getting involved in the online gaming industry.  The Maritimes and British Columbia have already established online gambling operations, and it is expected that the Quebec government will introduce online betting in September.
