Webcaster Alliance, a U.S.-based alliance of online music broadcasters, filed a federal lawsuit on August 27, 2003, against the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The broadcasters claim that major record labels "have unlawfully inflated webcasting royalty rates to keep independent contractors out of the market".
The suit alleges that the various negotiations that set the royalty rates for broadcasting songs over the Internet violated U.S. federal antitrust laws. The plaintiffs are seeking an injunction and the elimination of the per performance royalties.
