The Internet’s top video-rental service has recently been accused of violating U.S. privacy laws. Specifically, Netflix has been the subject of five separate lawsuits which have been filed in the past two months.
Each of the suits stem from allegations that Netflix retains customer information, including credit card numbers and rental histories, long after subscribers terminate their memberships. Such practices are contrary to the Video Privacy Protection Act, enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1988.
All of the complainants filed their actions in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California and have petitioned the Court for class action status.
