Music Industry Establishes One-Stop International Licence for Webcasters

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), which represents major and independent music labels, recently announced a new international agreement that will allow online radio broadcasters or "webcasters" to stream music programs on the Internet to consumers in a number of countries pursuant to a single "one-stop" licence.

Similar to the agreement on one-stop licensing of "simulcasts" by broadcasters simultaneously transmitting on the Internet which was introduced two years ago, this accord will make it easier for webcasters to provide their services legitimately by removing the previous requirement that they clear producers' rights by securing a licence from the collecting societies in each individual country. It is expected that the agreement will be signed by national collecting societies representing record producers in over 30 countries, including the USA, France, Germany, India, Spain and the UK, and will come into force over the next few weeks.
