A United States federal court in Dallas, Texas recently ordered the Website LokiTorrent.com ("LokiTorrent") to shut down and provide the Motion Picture Association of American (the "MPAA") with access to LokiTorrent's server logs. LokiTorrent was at one time among the top Websites for people seeking to download movies.
The MPAA has indicated that the data obtained from LokiTorrent's servers provides a roadmap to the individuals who have used the site to engage in illegal activities and that the information could quite possibly lead to lawsuits against such individuals. As part of the court order, the operator of LokiTorrent was required to pay a settlement fee in the amount of $1 million.
