Microsoft Corporation has sued Barnes & Noble, maker and retailer of the Nook e-reader, for patent infringement. The Nook employs Google’s Android operating system which Microsoft alleges infringes a number of Microsoft patents. The action, filed in the U.S. District Court of the Western District of Washington as well as with the International Trade Commission of the United States, also names Foxnonn International Holdings and Inventec Corporation as defendants.
Microsoft states that it had tried to reach a licensing agreement with Barnes & Nobel before filing suit. This is Microsoft’s preferred strategy, as demonstrated by the successful negotiation of licenses with HTC. In contrast, Microsoft sued Motorola, with whom it has been unable to negotiate a license.
Microsoft asserts 5 U.S. patents dating back to 1998, which relate to fundamental software techniques for loading images, child locking windows, and rendering content on mobile devices.
