The Governor of the U.S. state of Massachusetts has vetoed a bill to regulate out-of-state wine shipments. The bill would have restricted consumers’ choice in buying wine from out-of-state vineyards for shipment to Massachusetts. Prior to the bill, consumers were able to buy out-of-state wine as a result of a U.S. Supreme Court decision made earlier in the year. The bill would have prohibited shipments by wineries producing more than 30,000 gallons per year if they had been represented by a liquor wholesaler in the State for six months. The Governor was quoted as saying that the bill did not help consumers but instead, protected existing liquor distributors in Massachusetts.
