Charges against an executive of a UK-based online gambling company have been dismissed by the District Attorney’s Office of a Louisiana parish in exchange for payment of $400,000.00, reportedly because extradition issues made the case nearly impossible to prosecute.
Louisiana is one of a few states that has banned online wagering. Louisiana state police working with Saint Landry Parish prosecutors, secured warrants in May 2006 in an investigation focused on Sportingbet PLC. Sportingbet PLC operates out of England, where online gambling is legal.
The company’s chairman, Peter Dicks, was arrested in New York on a Louisiana warrant. However, because Mr. Dicks had not been physically present in Louisiana, New York laws prevented his extradition to the southern state and he was freed.
