The Korean Supreme Court has recently issued a ruling that confirms that the law of defamation applies to publications over the Internet in much the same way as it applies to other publications.
The Court found that a person who republishes a defamatory statement without checking its veracity is liable. In this case, the defendant posted, and elaborated, on allegations that had originally been posted anonymously. The Court found that reposting the original charges without determining whether they were true or false resulted in liability for defamation. The case sets the standard for determining responsibility for defamatory statements posted on the Web.
