Kahnawake Cybercasino Fined $2M for Illegal Gaming

Cyber World Group, a company that administers the world’s largest Internet casino, GoldenPalace.com, has pleaded guilty to charges of illegal gambling and must pay a $2 million fine. The online casino is administered through a server located on the Kahnawake Mohawk reserve in Quebec; about 60 per cent of the world’s online gambling traffic runs through servers in Kahnawake. The servers are managed by the Mohawk Internet Technologie (MIT), a business created by the community’s band council. This is the first time charges have been laid against a virtual casino in Quebec, and it has undoubtedly raised questions about Kahnawake’s authority to issue gaming licences. According to the Criminal Code, only the provincial government is authorized to hand out gaming licences, a position the Mohawk community have long argued against.
