Intellectual Ventures Files Infringement Complaints Against Nine Companies

Intellectual Ventures LLC ("IV"), the firm co-founded by Microsoft Corporation Chief Technology Officer, Nathan Myhrvold, filed three separate patent infringement complaints against nine companies in the technology industry on December 8, 2010.  The complaints were made against leaders in the software security industry (including, McAfee, Inc. and Symantec Corporation), the DRAM and Flash memory industry (including Elpida Memory, Inc), and the FPGA industry (including Altera Corporation). IV brought the complaints against those companies with which it has not had successful license agreement negotiations.

IV owns approximately 30,000 patents and patent applications, and is thought to have one of the largest portfolios among those firms that do not make or sell any products.  It claims to earn nearly $2 billion from licensing its patents.
