Industry Canada has released a music file sharing study entitled “The Impact of Music Downloads and P2P File-Sharing on the Purchase of Music: A Study for Industry Canada”, prepared by two University of London researchers. The study measures the extent to which music downloads over peer-to-peer file sharing networks affect music purchasing activity in Canada.
The study found that there is no direct evidence to suggest that the net effect of P2P file-sharing on CD purchasing is either positive or negative for Canada as a whole and that among Canadians actually engaged in it, P2P file-sharing increases CD purchasing. The study also found that people who purchase paid electronically delivered music are not less likely to purchase music in traditional markets (CD albums).
