High School Accused of Webcam Spying

A Philadelphia school district has been served with a lawsuit alleging violations of the federal Electronic Communications Privacy Act in connection with a program to provide high school students with laptop computers. The lawsuit alleges that the school district has “spied” on students by activating webcams located in the laptops. The alleged activity came to the attention of a student when confronted with a photograph taken by his webcam of the student engaging in what was characterized as “improper behaviour” in his home. The school district has confirmed its ability to remotely activate the webcams. The lawsuit seeks class proceeding certification, injunctive relief and unspecified monetary and punitive damages.
