HP, Apple, and Other Tech Companies Sued Over Wi-Fi Patents

Linex Technologies, a Florida company that licenses wireless technologies, has filed a complaint with the International Trade Commission (ITC) against several technology companies, including Hewlett-Packard and Apple, accusing them of violating patents it owns with respect to wireless communications.  Linex has asked the ITC to ban the import of offending products, which includes Hewlett-Packard’s Pavilian and Envy laptops, and Apple’s MacBook, MacBook Air, and Macbook Pro.

In addition to the complaint with the ITC, Linex also filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in the District of Delaware against the same companies.  The suit seeks monetary damages for the violation of its patents.

The patents in question concern “space diversity and coding, spread-spectrum antenna and method”, which uses multiple transmitter antennas and multiple receiving antennas to improve a signal’s reliability, and “multiple-input multiple-output spread spectrum system and method”, which uses multiple antennas to maximize a wireless signal indoors.
