Google to Comply with Brazilian Court Order to Disclose User Data

A recent report indicates that Google Inc. will comply with an order of the Brazilian court to turn over data that could be used to identify specific users of Google’s networking site, Orkut, that are accused of taking part in communities that encourage racism, pedophilia and homophobia. Google had earlier refused to comply with a request to produce user data made by the U.S. Department of Justice on the basis that such request was too broad. In contrast, Google felt that the disclosures ordered by the Brazilian court were relatively discrete, small and narrow. Further to its general intention to be as cooperative in the investigation and prosecution of crimes as possible, Google has stored information relating to other court cases, as well as content from user sites that it feels could be useful in a lawsuit.
