Google Sued over Digital Wallet

PayPal has recently launched a lawsuit in California against Google over its digital wallet, a system that would allow users to use their mobile telephones to pay for items at retail stores. In November of last year, Google hired a former PayPal executive, whom PayPal alleges took with him confidential information about PayPal’s competitive offering, and that Google thereby illegally stole PayPal’s trade-secrets.

Irrespective of whether Google did engage in misconduct, it is clear that the digital wallet market is being actively pursued by many businesses. Major credit card companies and smartphone manufacturers have designs on this potentially lucrative market. One of the key reasons that companies are pursuing this technology is that it provides an excellent forum in which one can sell highly targeted advertising to consumers actually in the act of purchasing.
