Google Inc. has confirmed that an antitrust investigation has been initiated by the Attorney General of Texas. The review of its business practices relates, at least in part, to alleged manipulation of search results to downrank companies such as Foundem, myTriggers and TradeComet. Foundem has previously complained to European regulators, which have also opened an investigation of Google. TradeComet and myTriggers have filed their own respective suits against Google though the TradeComet matter was dismissed for reasons of incorrect venue.
Foundem argues that Google does not practice search neutrality and preferentially treats certain services, including Google’s own services, to achieve preferential placement in search result pages, favouring those over competitors. Foundem also argues that Google uses “white lists” to render particular services immune to Google’s own search algorithms, providing “an unparalleled and unassailable competitive advantage.”
